What happens when you close Mineshire
The close button doesn't stop your servers by default. Here's where Mineshire goes and how to really quit.
In most programs the X closes everything. Mineshire does it differently, and it surprises people in both directions. Some are shocked their server is still up, and others wonder why a scheduled backup never ran.
The window closes, the servers don't
By default, closing the window sends Mineshire to the tray. That's the row of little icons near the clock on Windows, or the menu bar on a Mac. It keeps running there, and so do your servers, so friends can stay connected while you get on with something else.
Click its icon to bring the window back, or open its menu to start, stop or quit.
Quitting for real
Use Quit in the tray menu.
If you'd rather have the close button quit every time, open Settings and turn off Keep running in the background when I close the window. After that, closing the window quits the app, and it asks first if servers are still running.
Start with your computer
A separate switch, Start Mineshire when I sign in, is off until you turn it on. When it's on, Mineshire opens hidden in the tray as you sign in, and servers set to start with Mineshire start too.
Only the installed copy of Mineshire does this.
What needs Mineshire running
Anything Mineshire does for you needs it to be running, even with the window hidden:
- Scheduled backups.
- Restarting a server after a crash.
- The tunnel that gives friends an address.
If your computer is off or asleep, or you quit from the tray, none of that happens. The backup plans article covers what this means for schedules.
